Listening to Pandora™ from anywhere in the world

I know I’m supposed to have dedicated this blog to all things creative, which is the very reason for the blog title in the first place – but as most of you might now I’m pretty excited about finally being able to listen to Pandora™ radio while not being in the States!! For those who aren’t really aware of what Pandora™ is, it’s this online radio service that lets you create stations based on either a group or a song and then they go and play you all songs that match your initial criteria! Genius I tell you.. It’s part of the Music Genome project – look it up.

So how does one do this.. It’s pretty simple really – all you need to do is ask your web browser to open whatever webpage through a proxy. But how? I did a bit of research on this on Independence Day in Sri Lanka and here’s what I found. There’s this software called Tor [http://www.torproject.org/] and what it does is it creates a server on your local machine that logs on to this entire network of other computers around the world. All you need to do is ask your browser to send all web traffic to this server [through the proxy settings] and then use the Tor UI to ask it to only look up US based servers – ingenious! :)

So here’s what you do:

  1. Go to http://www.torproject.org/download.html.en and download the Tor browser bundle for whatever your O/S is. This is a self-extracting ZIP file, so extract it into some place convenient.
  2. Go to the folder that the files were extracted to and go to the Data folder.
  3. Go to the Tor folder inside the Data folder.
  4. Open the Torrc file in notepad and enter the following text at the end of the file:

    StrictExitNodes 1
exitnodes desync, 0xL37N1Tor, agrippator, whistlersmother, lefkada, bettyboop, croeso, TorLuwakOrg, nixnix, inap1, redpineapple, cronic, sasquatch, slowturtle2

  5. Save the file and exit notepad.
  6. Once that’s done, go back to the folder to which you initially extracted the files and run the ‘Start Tor Browser’ program. This will open up a window that gives you the connection status information. Once it says ‘Connected to the Tor network!’ you are in! Firefox will open up and congratulate you for using Tor. The only catch is that Pandora doesn’t work too well with Firefox [I personally don’t think anything works too well with Firefox anymore. They’ve just lost the plot to me. I much prefer Google Chrome now and so will tell you how to configure Chrome :) ].
  7. Before getting to Chrome, you need to know what port your server is running on. Here’s the easy way to do that:
    1. Go to the Firefox window that Tor opened for you.
    2. At the bottom of the screen, there’ll either be a green onion icon or text that reads ‘Tor Enabled’ – both in green. Right click on that and open up the Preferences.
    3. Click on the Proxy Settings tab and take a look at the values in the HTTP Proxy field. It should generally say 127.0.0.1 and then Port: #### [where #### are replaced by 4 numbers.]
    4. Note that down. You’ll need to put those same numbers in Chrome.
  8. Open Chrome and click on the spanner icon on right of the toolbar.
  9. Go to the Options screen and click on the ‘Under The Hood’ tab.
  10. Click on the ‘Change Proxy Settings’ button.
  11. Click on the ‘LAN Settings’ button.
  12. Under the Proxy Server section, check the ‘Use a proxy server for your LAN…’ and enter the values that you noted down from Firefox.
  13. Click on all the Ok buttons to get back to Chrome.
  14. Enter http://www.pandora.com in your address bar and voila! It won’t redirect to the page telling you the site’s restricted because of your IP!!

Now here’s the catch – you don’t want whatever internet traffic you generate to go through the proxy because that’ll be slow plus it could possibly mean that other people would have access to the information that you send or receive. So when you’re done listening to Pandora, exit Tor [this’ll close Firefox]. Now if you try opening a web page in Chrome, it’ll say that the page can’t be found. In order to undo this you’d need to follow steps 8 through 14 but uncheck the check box and you are back to normal.

Hope you guys enjoy this!

About Taariq Maruzook

Back in 2000, when I was in school, I discovered an interesting loop-hole in a machine on the computer network - I was able to log in to the administrator account and view the teachers' shared drive without the use of a password! Purely out of curiosity, I decided to take a look inside - and what did I find? Our Chemistry O Level mock exam paper! The only hitch was - London O Level Chemistry has 2 papers! This was just one of them! None-the-less, I figured I'd get the paper answered by my tuition teacher and make sure I did equally well in both papers. I was eager to prove that I was good at Chemistry so I memorized my tuition teacher's answers - and I aced the paper! In all my over confidence though, I completely forgot to actually study for the other one! Naturally, I was called in to the Warden's office for questioning. "Taariq.. How did you manage to get 100% for one paper and only 23% for the other?" "I don't know sir.." My prefectship was due that year but as you would imagine, I never got it. I did get it the following year for showing exemplary behaviour during that year, but at what cost? Had I not cheated that Chemistry paper, I would've become a prefect in Grade 11, and given that my competition for Head Boy had left school, that title would have been mine too. Decisions. A few of us are blessed with siblings - others among us are just blessed. I have a brother, 2 years my junior, and as you can imagine, sibling rivalry is rampant! That being said though, he and I get along like a house on fire! Put my dad into the equation as well and we really have a good time. To tell you a little bit more about myself, I'm 24 and have a girlfriend with whom I've been having a long distance relationship for the past 3 years. She's Sri Lankan and I've known her for the past 6 years. I met her and got to know her before she left for Australia for her university education and I asked her out just a few months before she left. I had hell to deal with for that, but that's a different story! "Why'd you have to wait so long!!" Apart from that, I have a passion for photography and am currently saving up for a fully loaded digital SLR. I don't know how long that'll take, but that's my goal. I also enjoy listening to music, blogging and helping people to help themselves get the most out of life. I enjoy people. Whether its talking to them or capturing them on film, its the variety of experiences they bring that I enjoy. Each person, I find, has a story. Each person has something unique you can learn from them. That learning is what makes you a better person in the end. I'm generally quiet by nature and prefer to observe and analyze a situation before making any comments about it - but I make sure my comments are heard. And why am I doing here telling you all this? It was my decision. View all posts by Taariq Maruzook
